Over the years the history and beauty of Dean Street has attracted the attention of many artists. Doing a Deanie highlights these works drawing on the AlburyCity Collection and includes works by renowned photographer Max Dupain, stunning street panoramas and views from Monument Hill.

THE EXPERIMENT: REMEMBERING THE NATIONAL GROWTH CENTRE
UNTIL DECEMBER 15
It's been 40 years since Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, NSW premier Robert Askin and Victorian premier Rupert Hamer signed the Albury-Wodonga Area Development Agreement in Wodonga.
It was part of the national Growth Centre Project, a bold plan to turn Albury-Wodonga into a major inland centre. At the time, Albury's population was approximately 30,000 people while Wodonga had 13,000 residents. Jobs, development, tourism and housing were a major focus of the project, which mapped out the growth of the twin cities, Albury and Wodonga.
The Experiment: Remembering the National Growth Centre explores how the twin cities have been imagined, promoted and grown since 1973. The exhibition features objects, photographs, archives and personal accounts from residents that highlight the experience of being part of an experiment that focused the nation’s attention on Albury-Wodonga as never before.
CROSSING PLACE
UNTIL JUNE 12, 2014
This exhibition tells the story of Albury from first contact with the Wiradjuri, traditional owners of the land to the City we share today. The exhibition includes the story of the Bonegilla Migrant Reception & Training Centre and other key influences on the region.
On the second Sunday of the month enjoy a free guided tour of ‘The Crossing Place’ exhibition provided by the museum’s curator or experience an audio tour of the ‘Crossing Place, a story of Albury’ exhibition. Listen to first hand memories of significant events in Albury’s history and you’ll feel as if you were there!
Enjoy a chat with family and friends over the contents of a Crossing Place Box. Memories and conversation will flow once you discover what’s inside. Old and New Time Games will take you on a journey through childhood fun and games. Play a round of simple Snap or dominos, test your mind with a hand of Bridge or challenge your friends to a poker night.
For more information, phone (02) 6023 8333.
FIRST FLIGHT
UNTIL FEBRUARY 2
In 1911, mechanics Azor Robbins and Alexander Porter embarked on an ambitious plan to build their own monoplane. Spurred on by the world’s new fascination for flight, the young mechanics set up shop in Albury and began work.
In March 1913 the home-built monoplane was fitted with the Robbins and Porter-designed and constructed flat-four engine and underwent taxi trials. On July 27, 1913 it was taken to Bungowannah Park Estate and, in front of six witnesses, it flew six metres off the ground. The trial was repeated a few days later but after a mechanical malfunction the plane never flew again.
A life-size replica of the Robbins and Porter monoplane has been hung from the Albury Library Museum ceiling.

TREES & LEAVES: PRINT SERIES EXHIBITION
UNTIL DECEMBER 31
Trees and Leaves is an exhibition by Stanley based artist Chris Dormer. It consists of small works that are simple and evocative and inspired by her life as an artist, gardener and lover of trees. Chris is exhibiting original one-off prints and monoprints that use the leaf as a metaphor for the tree and the natural world. Chris is a practising artist working in textiles and more recently, printmaking. She regularly exhibits her work in local and regional galleries and art shows. In February this year her work was shown in the Block X Block printmakers’ exhibition at Arts Space Wodonga. She works from her studio at home in Stanley and at the Creators Artspace studio on the Lincoln Causeway in Wodonga. This new print series explores the micro and macrocosms of the leaf, its shape, texture and nuances. These are highlighted by their changing positions, shapes and relationships such that the parts can then be seen as of the whole, creating vistas, landscapes and imagined places. Open Wednesdays to Sundays. For more information, phone Indigo Vineyard on (03) 5727 0233.

BOGONG VILLAGE
BOGONG ELECTRIC
UNTIL DECEMBER 1
Bogong ELECTRIC is a free exhibition and performance event focusing on the Kiewa Hydroelectric scheme. First developed in the 1930s, the hydroelectric scheme is the first of its kind, and the second largest overall in mainland Australia. Since its inception it has evolved to comprise four power stations and attendant infrastructure including dams, rail sidings, substations and networks of tunnels and aqueducts for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. The range of infrastructure used to exploit the gravitational force of falling or flowing water and the manner in which it inhabits the natural environment provides a rich source for investigation for artists participating in the event. Bogong ELECTRIC seeks to expand the understanding of the environmental effects of hydroelectricity by direct and indirect encounters of the scheme through installation and performance works that reference electricity within the process of production and presentation. A broad range of national and international artists feature in the month-long event, which takes place at Bogong Village in North East Victoria. In collaboration exhibition with the Kiewa Valley Historical Society, an additional exhibition at Mount Beauty Information of historical images and objects will take place this is supported by guided tours of the scheme. Bogong ELECTRIC is part of a series of cultural initiatives generated by the Bogong Centre for Sound Culture, investigating the history and ecology of the Australian Alps.
