Emergency services were called to Lake Nillahcootie, south of Benalla, late this afternoon after a man was reported missing about 10am.
The divers searched the water for about two hours before finding his body 50m from the shore.
Police believe the man, in his 50s, had gone into the lake to retrieve his small metal boat that had drifted from the bank.
