The Wodonga Catholic College student, 17, has gone from triathlon obscurity a little over a year ago to being part of the Victorian squad and targeting a top-10 finish at next year’s nationals.
It could be said that Rodgers had taken to the sport like a fish to water but he was an accomplished swimmer long before switching to the multiple disciplines of his new sport.
“I had gone for a few rides with dad, came from a swim background and decided to give it a go and from there it just kept going,” he said.
“Now I’m with the state squad — the triathlon Victoria development squad.
“It means you race under the Victorian banner, represent the state at the nationals.
“A year ago I was just hanging around with mates.
“But now it’s full-on doing 13 to 14 sessions a week, going through planned recovery sessions and eating all the right food, hardly any junk food.”
