Rutherglen’s Sen-Constable Steve Ireland said a man had approached the woman in the car park behind The Star Hotel after she left the pub about 1am on Saturday.
He said the man had grabbed her handbag and run into Reid Street.
The woman was not injured and no weapons were used.
The thinly built man, who was about 182 centimetres tall, was wearing a beanie, black top and blue jeans.
Sen-Constable Ireland said the woman had a mobile phone and other items in her bag.
He said bag snatches were rare in the town.
Anyone who was in the area at the time or who believes they have anyone with information about the thief is asked to phone Rutherglen police on (02) 6032 9612 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
