In a police interview played in court yesterday, Daniel’s mother Donna Thomas said the children, then aged 12, 11 and seven, were at home when Daniel is believed to have died in 2003.

They are listed to appear at the inquest on Monday.

They are among 24 witnesses expected to give evidence during the eight-day inquest, including Ms Martyn, who has been subpoenaed to appear at the court next Tuesday.

Detective Sgt Russell Sheather, who was a homicide squad investigator at the time of Daniel’s death, will continue to give evidence today, as well as Jane Richards, Ms Martyn’s former drug and alcohol worker.

Ms Thomas’ partner Colin Bilney will also be called, as well as Leading Sen-Constable Phil Ryder, who assisted with the early investigation.

Forensic anthropologist Professor Christopher Briggs yesterday told the court he found no evidence of trauma to Daniel’s skeleton.

It was during the clinical evidence that Daniel’s mother Donna Thomas broke down for the first time and excused herself from court.

Daniel’s father Kevin Ruffels sat in court throughout.

Mr Ruffels said during a break midway through yesterday’s proceedings that he hoped the inquest would finally bring a conclusion.

“I’m glad it’s finally under way and at the end of it all, finally having answers to what happened,” he said.
