The double-sided abstract piece depicting reflections of Lake Hume was also one of three commended at the Arts Space Wodonga exhibition, which closed on Saturday.
The Albury-based artist said she had spent a lot of time painting and drawing the lake when visiting family at Bellbridge.
“The weir is so important in all our lives,” she said.
“Without the weir we wouldn’t have water.”
Ms van Zanten said she was overwhelmed to win the people’s choice award because of the high quality of the artwork at the exhibition.
“I didn’t even think I’d get a look in,” she said.
Arts Wodonga chair Dorothy Vassallo said the $5000 piece won by a small margin against 28 other art works.
