His widow, June, had to bring up her three young children on her own after leaving Oaklands to be with family in Sydney.
She had never returned to the town until her daughter convinced her to attend yesterday’s parade and ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of her husband’s death.
It was an important occasion for more than one family involved in the tragic event; the son of bridge builder Reg Hunter (killed by Bill Little, who shot both men) attended with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr Hunter said the effects of the event were ongoing. Christmas celebrations were forever tarnished by losing his father at this time of year.
Cyril Howe, promoted to sergeant posthumously, was remembered for his generosity.
It was his courage and dedication to duty that Supt Beth Stirton noted should always be an inspiration to police officers, while there are permanent reminders in Oaklands and offered to his family that acknowledge his ultimate sacrifice.
