A NEW section of Wodonga’s inner ring road was opened yesterday with the completion of a $700,000 alteration to Lawrence Street.
The changes to the street, next to Arts Space Wodonga, give traffic travelling between Havelock Street and the High Street roundabout priority over traffic travelling west along Lawrence Street.
Work by contractor Excell Gray Bruni was completed two weeks ahead of schedule, despite asbestos having to be cleared from a Telstra pit, the council’s planning and infrastructure director Leon Schultz said.
“The works aim to improve the traffic flow in Lawrence and Havelock streets, ease traffic in High Street and improve pedestrian safety,” Mr Schultz said.
As well, the project had resulted in the addition of three pedestrian crossings in one of the city’s busiest spots.
“The crossings are a new design which we will be rolling out at works around the city, a design which has several features to improve safety for all road users,” Mr Schultz said..
“We are excited that this stage of works is now complete before the holidays as we look ahead to the new year and our next stage of major works in Elgin Boulevard.”
The new pedestrian crossings feature raised markings across the roadways.
