Yesterday, the cities had a wet, cool respite from the heat.
Temperatures ranged from 13.3 degrees at 9.30am to a top of 23.3 degrees at 6pm, while 13 millimetres of rain was recorded.
This followed five hot days, with Friday (40.7) and Saturday (40.5) being the hottest December days for several years.
Boxing Day will be similar but with the chance of a shower or two.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said a high pressure system centred on the Tasman Sea would return northerly winds which will bring heat from inland Australia, reaching 37 on Friday.
Relief wouldn’t again come until Sunday when a low pressure trough would cool things down again.
