Leading Sen-Constable Mick Guiney said a 2012 Suzuki Swift was stolen from the driveway of a home in Showers Avenue in Bright between 11pm yesterday and 4am today.
Residents of Hawthorn Lane, about two kilometres away, phoned 000 when they noticed the car alight about 4am in a reserve at the end of their street near the Ovens River.
Bright CFA firefighters responded, but the car was destroyed.
Sen-Constable Guiney said it was a highly unusual crime for the quiet town.
“We’ve never had this happen before...It’s the second car we’ve had stolen in 10 years,” he said.
He said police are investigating who was behind the theft and blaze.
He warned residents and visitors to keep their cars locked.
“We enjoy a very low crime rate, but it shows we’re not immune to it,” he said.
Anyone with information is urged to phone Bright police on (03) 5755 1444.
