Everyone should be prepared to take action if the worst eventuates.
Fire services are on stand-by with teams in locations where the risk is expected to be highest.
While Country Fire Authority and Rural Fire Service teams are ready should any fires flare, that doesn’t mean individual property owners should be complacent.
Hopefully most have already made fire plans detailing a response if their properties are threatened, but if not, it’s not too late to make arrangements early today to leave home if necessary.
Fire bans in the North-East and in the Southern Riverina mean those in both those areas must obey the directive no fires are lit in the open air today.
There are other precautions, such as not driving in long grass that might ignite from the vehicle’s catalytic converter.
If you see a fire or smoke, don’t hesitate in raising the alarm.
Those few minutes may be the vital difference in getting to a fire before it spreads, causing greater damage.
