A "BRAVE" Albury cyclist chased and caught a thief who snatched a hand-bag from an elderly woman today, police say.
Albury police Inspector David Cottee said a man, 44, saw a teenager grab the woman's bag on the corner of North Street and Park Avenue about 12pm.
Insp Cottee said the man, on a bicycle, immediately gave chase before catching up with him nearby.
The man made the teenager retrieve the bag, which he had discarded nearby, and hand it to him as police arrived.
A number of people had come aid of the Lavington woman, 82, who was uninjured, but shaken.
The Jindera teenager, 18, was arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Insp Cottee praised the public who stepped in for their help.
"The reaction from the public was immediate and selfless and is a great example of good community and citizenship. Without such quick and brave actions, it is possible that the man may have escaped the area. On behalf of the police at Albury, I thank them for their actions," he said.
