A FIRE underneath the Tocumwal Golf Club forced the evacuation of 70 people on Monday night.
Three Fire and Rescue NSW trucks — two from Tocumwal, the other from Finley — responded to the fire in a manhole about 8.40pm.
Tocumwal captain Mervyn Reed said boxes were stored in the area, which resulted in “a lot of acrid smoke, more than flames”.
Captain Reed said minor damage was caused to electrical wiring in the concrete and brick building.
Crews spent about two hours at the scene, mostly to rid the manhole of smoke to allow access.
The cause is under investigation.
