Elvis' birthday celebrated in Parkes

2014 Parkes Elvis Festival

On January 8, 1935, a household name was born and this year Elvis Presley would have been turning 79.

The Kings 79th birthday marks the start of the 22nd Parkes Elvis Festival, with fans from across the county converging on the small town to remember The King.

The movie Kissin' Cousins is the theme for the festival with Elvis' co-star Cynthia Pepper a special guest in the town this week.

Ms Pepper starred as Elvis' love interest in the film and will spend the week in Parkes for the festival.

Ms Pepper will appear at the Miss Priscilla dinner in Parkes dressed in her Kissin' Cousins uniform.

People are already in Parkes for the official start of the festival today, for others they are shining their shoes and packing their bags ready for the Elvis Express as it leaves Sydney tomorrow.

For Elvis fan Jimmy Davison today is extra special.

Mr Davison shares his birthday with The King and will celebrate as one of the many buskers along Clarinda Street in Parkes.

It is the first time Mr Davison has been to the festival.

"I've always wanted to do it before I get too old, before life passes me by and I can't do it," Mr Davison said.

He has also brought along his partner Wendy Feth and their Chihuaha, Elvis. Chihuahua Elvis is decked out in his very own jewelled white jumpsuit, made just for him.

Throughout his life Elvis was well known for his talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma and good humor as well as his humility and the kindness he demonstrated to millions.

Elvis died on August 16, 1977.
