Spurred on by the world’s new fascination for flight, the young mechanics set upshop in Albury and began work. In March 1913 the home-built monoplane was fitted with the Robbins and Porter-designed and constructed flat-four engine and underwent taxi trials. On July 27, 1913 it was taken to Bungowannah Park Estate and, in front of six witnesses, it flew six metres off the ground. The trial was repeated a few days later but after a mechanical malfunction the plane never flew again. A life-size replica of the Robbins and Porter monoplane has been hung from the Albury Library Museum ceiling.

BLOCK 19 — BONEGILLA MIGRANT EXPERIENCE
ANNE FRANK — A HISTORY FOR TODAY
UNTIL FEBRUARY 28
This compelling exhibition carries a strong message for young people on the Border, with a unique insight into the history of the Jewish Holocaust from the perspective of Anne Frank and her family. Presented by the Anne Frank Stichting (Foundation), this international display uses original images and quotations from the Diary of Anne Frank. It depicts the most important developments of that time, the rise of national socialism, World War II and the persecution of the Jews. It shows how persecuted people can be affected by political decisions and the actions of individuals. It also provokes thought on the consequences the Anne Frank story has for today’s world. A set of teachers’ notes is available to allow teachers to take a self-guided tour of this exhibition. Annelies “Anne” Marie Frank (1929-1945) is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Her autobiography, The Diary of a Young Girl, has been the basis for several plays and films. Born in the city of Frankfurt am Main in Weimar Germany, she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Born a German national, Frank lost her citizenship in 1941. She gained international fame posthumously after her diary was published. It documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Free entry. Open 10am to 3pm. For bookings, phone Bonegilla Migrant Experience on (02) 6020 6912.

The Pilbara Series celebrates one of the great series of landscape paintings in twentieth century Australian art. Fred Williams pioneered a new vision of the Australian landscape, and became one of the most important Australian artists. He first visited the Pilbara, a remote area in Australia’s far north-west, in May 1979 and was motivated by its exceptional beauty. By mid-June, Williams had produced almost 100 gouaches of the Pilbara. He continued to produce works years after his visit. Large in scale and striking in colour, they are powerfully evocative of the Pilbara and in many ways operate as both symbolic and representational depictions of inland Australia.
