Police are asking other witnesses to the fire on a field between the Wodonga Catholic College and Wodonga Middle Years College at 11.30pm to contact them.
Detective Sen-Constable Brendan Roche said a 50-by-90-metre patch was burnt before four CFA crews put out the blaze.
Sen-Constable Roche said the bang reportedly sounded like fireworks.
He urged witnesses to phone Wodonga police on (02) 6049 2600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
