BRIGHT RIVER POOL AT CENTENARY PARK, BRIGHT
The Ovens River is dammed at Bright and Porepunkah from around Christmas to Easter to create long, cool river swimming pools. There’s a lifeguard on duty in the afternoon most days during summer at these pools in Centenary Park Bright and River Reserve Porepunkah. A children’s paddling pool on the river banks nearby give the whole family a chance to enjoy the water. There are two water slides, a diving board, plenty of grass for a picnic and Bright Brewery and Ginger Baker cafe close by. BYO lilo, or you can hire from Shell Service Station, corner of Gavan and Anderson streets, Bright.

BREWERY BRIDGE, JAMIESON
This riverside spot is summertime bliss for young families. There’s shallow water for the kids and a swimming hole for the bigger kids, picnic tables and shelters, as well as loads of manicured grass to laze on. It is only a short stroll to toilets and playground and to the shops for ice-creams and cool drinks. Jamieson is a 30-minute drive from Mansfield.
LADIES BATH FALLS, MOUNT BUFFALO
From Porepunkah take the Mount Buffalo Road up past the entrance to Mount Buffalo National Park to the Eurobin Falls walking track. An easy 10-minute walk in, Ladies Bath Falls is the first waterfall you come to, with crystal-clear, mountain-fed water cascading into a pool made from smooth granite boulders.
BEECHWORTH CASCADES, BEECHWORTH HISTORIC PARK
Walk, bike or drive the scenic drive through a changing landscape of hills, granite boulders and forested nooks. At the bottom of the Gorge, water cascading downstream from Spring Creek forms small rock pools, where the locals go to cool off. Dangle your feet and enjoy the view down the valleys. Access requires walking on rocks that can be slippery, so best suited to older children.
MITTA RIVER, BEHIND THE MITTA HOTEL
BYO lilo and cool off in this family-friendly swimming hole in the beautiful Mitta River. Surrounded by trees and with a natural beach, this swimming hole is suitable for all ages. Float awhile, then hop out for a cleansing ale or country pub meal at the newly-renovated historic Mitta Hotel.
