The Umbrella Collective — an initiative of five members of Creators Art Space and endorsed by Murray Arts — was one of six cultural organisations and five events to yesterday receive funding under the council’s arts and cultural contribution programs.
Artist Abi Thompson said the $3000 grant would allow the collective to advertise and promote the project over the next five months.
“Our art works are all different, but they come under the umbrella of homemade and the make nice gifts,” she said.
“That’s how we came up with the name, although we have spelt it another way.”
Ms Thompson, Ann Collins, Robyn White, Margret Timmins and Melanie Ruth are the artists involved.
Their handmade accessories, clothing, jewellery, beading and tea cosies are for sale at Creators Art Space on the Lincoln Causeway.
Ms Thompson said the project gave artists the chance to hone product development and marketing skills making locally produced gifts.
An opening will be held today from 4pm.
Opening times are Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Other recipients of the council cultural grants were Hot House Theatre, Flying Fruit Fly Foundation, Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company, Wodonga Citizens’ Band and Lynette Callaghan.
Organisations to receive funding were Parklands Albury Wodonga for its fishy fun run and half marathon, The Wodonga Basketball Association’s junior invitational tournament, the Wodonga Apex Club’s for its station cinemas, MEGAS Music for Music in the Park and the Wodonga RSL for this year’s Anzac Day events.
