A YOUNG man was stabbed in the back after an altercation in a Wangaratta street yesterday with police still on the hunt for his attacker.

Detective Sen-Constable Paul Campbell said police and paramedics found a Wangaratta man, 21, with a knife wound to his lower back at the intersection of Burke and Flanagan streets at 4.45am.
Sen-Constable Campbell said he was taken to Wangaratta hospital where he underwent surgery yesterday afternoon and remains in the critical care unit.
He said an altercation broke out between at least three men and a woman at the intersection.
Police have not established if they know each other.
Sen-Constable Campbell said they have identified a suspect, a Wangaratta man, 19.
"We're continuing with our inquiries. We're seeking a person of interest but at this stage we're not prepared to identify him," he said.
