Waters, 22, and Lieschke, 18, are expected to feature prominently in the $1000 race, which has attracted runners from league, AFL and soccer backgrounds.
“I’m not sure how I’ll go,” Waters said.
“Ryan and I have done some running in Wodonga and I would say it will be pretty close.
“It usually is.”
Waters has been a fine performer for Melrose in recent seasons, while Lieschke is crossing over from rival club Hotspurs.
The race is expected to be wide open, with last year’s winner, Wang Rovers speedster Ash Pollard, and Albury Thunder’s 2012 champion Chris Seaton unavailable.
Entries have been strong across the Albury Gift Carnival, with 70 runners taking part in the 120-metre Gift.
The gates will open at 8.30am with Olympians Mel Breen, Lauren Boden and Brendan Cole to take charge of the little athletics program from 10am.
Last year’s Stawell Gift winner Andrew Robinson, defending champ Shane Ezard and respected coach Matt Beckenham will also be involved.
Professional sprints start at 1.50pm with the 70m frontmarkers.
Entry is $8 for adults, with children under 16 free.
