Residents near the Burke and Flanagan streets intersection called Triple-0 early on Thursday after they heard the sound of a fight between three young men and a woman at 4.45am.
Detective Sen-Constable Paul Campbell said police and paramedics had found a man, 21, with a knife wound to his lower back.
He was taken to Wangaratta hospital.
The victim also had surgery on Thursday afternoon.
Sen-Constable Campbell said the man could be kept in hospital for up to a week.
He said police had not yet established whether the group involved in the brawl knew each other, but investigators say a 19-year-old appeared to be the attacker.
“We’re continuing our inquiries and we’re seeking a person of interest, but, at this stage, we’re not prepared to identify him,” Sen-Constable Campbell said.
He urged the youth to come forward and phone police.
Sen-Constable Campbell also asked anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
