A gold medal-winning store, Coffee Mamma prides itself on blends for home brewing. Owner Matt Sheridan is hesitant to pick a favourite because methods alter taste significantly, but the “Mamma Deluxe” is the most universal due to its chocolaty smoothness. If you’re into plunging, go with the Afro Cuban.
ZO’I ESPRESSO (Albury)
Zo’i coffee is all locally roasted using organic, fair trade beans from countries across the world. Owners Rob and Janina Hiles recommend customers try the Mexican Chiapas, a rich and medium-bodied blend with spice and fruit undertones, and a hint of chocolate.
MYRTLEFORD BUTTER FACTORY (Myrtleford)
Myrtleford Butter Factory works closely with Jasper Coffee, a Melbourne-based company also selling fair trade and organic coffee. Their best seller is the East Timor maubisse, which has nutty and chocolate characters. “We put all our staff through intensive training with Jaspers, which certainly helps in making a good cup of coffee,” owner Naomi Ingleton said.
CAFE DERAILLEUR (Wangaratta)
Cafe Derailleur uses beans from Coffee Supreme, which is a New Zealand-based
company now also roasting in Melbourne. Owner Eric Bittner says it’s the passionate staff that make his coffee stand out, from adjusting the grinder according to temperature and humidity down to only using the freshest beans. He recommends the south-Ethiopian blend for milk-lovers due to its rich flavours of
chocolate and spice. The southern-Indian blend is darker, richer and smoother for
drinkers of black coffee.
CELLAR DOOR WINE STORE (Beechworth)
Is this a mistake you might ask? But this Ford Street boutique retailer is a bit of a favourite not only for its local and global wines by the glass but also for its Allpress coffee and Chamellia tea, the perfect pick-me-up when you have spent a day on the tourist trail. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, there is a range of platters featuring salamis, prosciutto and cheeses, bagels and other gourmet treats.
