By the time staff from Essential Energy completed repairs at 1.30pm, temperatures in the city had risen from 25 to 36 degrees.
The regional manager for Essential Energy, Steven Ilitch, said the problem on the high voltage network was discovered in Calimo Street about 8.30am.
The fault had required immediate attention, he said.
Mr Ilitch reminded customers they could phone his company’s 24-hour supply interruptions hotline on 132 080 for information on blackouts in the region.
