The Wodonga teenager, still playing as an amateur, carded six birdies in his opening round but a double bogey and bogey marred his score.
Late yesterday Murray, 16, was in a tie for 13th, four shots behind New Zealand’s US and European tour veteran Mark Brown.
Murray, who started his round on the 10th tee, was even with the card after a double bogey six at the Par-4 16th.
But three birdies on the inward nine including the last hole had him well inside the cut.
