Three male teens confronted the 21-year-old at the Thurgoona Plaza before one of them, 16, hit him so hard he fell to the ground at about 8.30pm yesterday.
From there, the 16-year-old continued his vicious assault as the other teens, 16 and 18, prevented a witness from intervening.
The man was rushed to Albury Base Hospital with fractures, swelling and cuts to his face.
Albury Police Inspector David Cottee said the man required surgery at a major hospital, other than Albury, and ongoing treatment.
Insp Cottee said he didn’t believe alcohol had been a factor.
Albury detectives are investigating.
