Taking a shortcut to move a hefty load — or working for an employer who doesn’t pay proper attention to safety — can have terrible consequences.
And it’s not as uncommon as some might think.
WorkCover Albury’s Neville Burt says 30 per cent of workplace injuries are linked to unsafe lifting practices.
That makes efforts under way in the transport industry a decent step in the right direction.
As Mr Burt highlights, more than $50 million has been spent on worker’s compensation in that industry in just two years.
Albury Freight Distribution Centre should be applauded for its commitment to making sure its staff do not end up as another statistic.
It is a simple rationale — the business needs its staff to be fit and healthy.
To that end it takes the time to show staff how to lift correctly, backing that up with expert help and supervision.
But of course there are many other businesses who need to follow this lead if there is to be a genuine industry-wide shift.
It’s a commonsense argument — keep it safe, become more productive.
