A burglar who disabled the electricity and slipped through the roof tiles of a Wahgunyah bottle shop may have fallen through its plaster ceiling in an effort to steal two bottles of grog on Saturday.
The bungled burglary was part of a spate of weekend crimes, which included a violent home invasion, that Wodonga detectives are calling for witnesses to help solve.
Detective Leading Sen- Constable Andrew Leonard said a burglar disabled the electrical box to the Cellarbrations bottle shop on Foord Street in Wahgunyah at 3.35am.
The thief then used a ladder to climb onto the roof, remove tiles and slip into the cavity.
But their smooth entry was foiled when they possibly crashed through the plaster and fell almost three metres to the floor below.
“They could have climbed down, but it looks like at this stage that it was a bit of an unplanned drop into the business,” Sen-Constable Leonard said.
He said two bottles of alcohol were stolen.
In Wodonga, a young man and woman were assaulted in their home in a violent home invasion, also about 3.30am Saturday.
Sen-Constable Leonard said three men walked into the Black Street home in Wodonga through an unlocked front door and confronted the people inside in relation to an outstanding debt.
He said a number of demands were made before a woman, 23, and a man, 19, were punched in the face.
They had cuts and bruises that did not require hospitalisation.
It’s believed the three men, who could be in their early 20s, were seen heading towards the Birallee Tavern area.
Police are also investigating two attempted burglaries at two businesses in High Street, Wodonga.
Police said thieves attempted to force open the roller door of a Thai restaurant.
At a conveyancing business burglars got into a carport but did not take anything.
Anyone with information should phone Wodonga police.
