The 2013-14 charge is $9745 per allotment, with a proposal to rise to $13,237 in 2014-15.
The council’s draft infrastructure contributions plan details the proposals it says would put Albury on a par with cities such as Wagga, where developer contributions are about $15,000.
The cost is borne by developers who then pass it on as part of the sale price for individual home sites.
The council’s planning and environment director, Michael Keys, says new development must be expected to make a reasonable contribution towards the provision of new and augmented infrastructure for Albury.
He said the city had an environmental plan which identified land for long-term growth that would support a population in excess of 100,000 people in 50 years.
No doubt the proposals will be viewed with great interest by those who have development interests in Albury and who will make their views known when the council seeks public comment ahead of a July 1 starting date for the new plan.
