Since its inception in 1921, the Archibald Prize has continued to be one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards, never failing to draw interest, attention and debate. Awarded annually to the year’s best portrait painting, the Archibald Prize is a who’s who of Australian culture — from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. In 2013, 868 entries were received and judged by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This always popular exhibition wilkl this year feature the winning work, Hugo, which earned artist Del Kathryn Barton the $75,000 first prize and Vincent Fantauzzo’s study of actor Asher Keddie, Love face. With the Albury Art Gallery closed for renovation until mid-next year, the Albury Library Museum is hosting the Archibald Regional Tour. Free to the public on Sundays and after 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Visit the exhibition and vote for your favourite portrait in the Archibald Prize 2013 People’s Choice Award and go into the draw to win a $500 ANZ Visa Debit card. The People’s Choice Winner will be announced at a special closing event on Sunday, May 4 when you can meet Albury-born artist Rose Wilson, an Archibald Prize 2012 finalist. Howard Daniel was an avid and eclectic collector. A true renaissance man, Daniel’s passion to collect inspired his research for writing books and acquiring diverse sculptures and exotic figurines. Daniel was an empathic individual, advocating for human rights and became involved in international affairs. This took him into many countries; South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, particularly in Romania and Yugoslavia and China at the time of the Revolution. The Daniel Gift Collection came to AlburyCity through the offices of MrJustice JF. Nagle, a long-time friend. The gift includes a Tang dynasty ceramic horse and rider, Chinese ivory figurines, Tibetan gilt bronze sculptures depicting fearsome-looking deities and Ashanti Gold weights from West Africa. This exhibition showcases these stunning Gods and Monsters.

Wiradjuri Talkback is a celebration of the perspectives and traditional knowledge of the Albury-Wodonga region's Aboriginal people, showcasing a powerful and thought-provoking blend of traditional and contemporary elements illustrating the rich cultural traditions of Wiradjuri country. Alongside traditional Riverina bark paintings and tools are sketches by 19th century Aboriginal artist Tommy McRae, a local identity famed for his depictions of traditional Aboriginal life.

This international travelling exhibition brings together the work of four Australian artists — Stephen Copland, Meredith Brice, Colin G. Reaney and Karee S. Dahl — who have recently lived and worked in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah. It has an a common theme that explores the notion of itinerant art practice, built on responses to shifts and movements in moving through, and living within, different contexts as citizens within the global village. The exhibition displays the artists’ immersion and exploration of the concept of home, identity and relationship to place.

HOLBROOK’S HISTORICAL TREASURES

This large, unique and varied display of historical treasures includes the best collection of submarine artefacts in Australia. There’s also an exhibition on the Holbrook bypass. The Woolpack Inn Museum is a two story heritage listed historic building located in the main street of Holbrook. The original Woolpack Inn was opened in 1839 by John Mitten and continued trading until it was destroyed by fire in 1895. All of the items on display have been donated by local residents over many years and now fill 22 rooms, depicting life in the 19th century include bedrooms, dining room, sitting room, kitchen, pantry and laundry, along with a number of other rooms filled with interesting items from bygone years. MARK STONER: THE SHAPE OF THE LAND

“The shape of land is evocative of our imaginings of landscape and poses several questions. What is land, its form and material? Do we imagine verdant rolling hills, an infrared mineralogical survey map, a topographical map of the high country, or a degraded saline ancient drainage basin? Is landscape a romantic vista of plains and far off mountain peaks or an analytical outcome of complex interactions of time, geomorphic forces and weathering?” - Mark Stoner 2013. This exhibition explores these themes bringing together various installation pieces for the first time. Mark Stoner has exhibited nationally and has received several grants and residencies. His work is held in the collections of state and regional galleries including the National Gallery of Australia and he has also completed many public commissions.

Anthea Kemp focuses on her reaction to an introduced urban environment in which she now lives, in comparison to the familiar natural landscape she grew up in. With the Warby Ranges at her back door for 18 years, Kemp then moved to Melbourne. It is through her subconscious reaction to the urban and the natural, the organic and the geometric, that she has juxtaposed an abstract landscape in her paintings.

Victoria’s most inspiring and high achieving 2013 VCE artists will showcase their work in the annual exhibition, Regional Art & Design (RAD). RAD is an exhibition of painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, film, animation, textiles, drawing, installation and printmaking produced by VCE Art and VCE Studio Arts students. Education programs include introductory lectures, folio viewings, floor talks, sessions with exhibitors and the curator. ALBERT TUCKER — PORTRAITS

Albert Tucker was a major figure in the Australian modernist movement, which challenged the foundations of traditional art practice and adopted a spontaneous and visionary approach to the creative process. Throughout his career, he painted significant portraits of his contemporaries and loved ones. Sitters included Tucker’s colleagues in the so called Angry Penguins group or ‘Heide circle’ — Joy Hester, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and John Perceval. This exhibition presents 10 of Tucker’s most important portraits that transition through various periods of his artistic development, leaving a thread that connects a great portion of his oeuvre.
