Inspector Anthony Moodie said an Albury man, 20, was walking along Dean Street near David Street between 1am and 2am when he was approached by another person and punched to the head.
The victim suffered a bloodied nose and fractures to his face.
"The assault appears completely unprovoked," Insp Moodie said.
Police want to speak with a man, aged between 17-23 years of age, 180-185cm tall, has a slim build, brown hair and was seen wearing a white T-shirt with dark stripes and dark, long pants.
"There is no doubt there was many people in that area at the time and I would ask members of the public to help us stamp out this type of behaviour in our main street by assisting us with information," Insp Moodie said.
If you who saw this incident or have any information contact Albury police on (02) 6023 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
