Cr Alexander said the response so far to the prize, which had attracted more than 650 entries from every state and territory in Australia, had exceeded her expectations.
“We hope to have it every two years if this is a success and we attract enough people to see the paintings,” she said.
Cr Alexander said the community had embraced the idea.
Entries from big name artists had even got young people, not normally interested in the Benalla Art Gallery, talking about the prize.
After Image, & and the other 31 short listed entries will be on display at Benalla Art Gallery until July 13.
Friends of the Benalla Art Gallery raised the $50,000.
