The Wodonga RSL sub-branch yesterday confirmed alternative arrangements with the march to start in Havelock Street, turn right into Lawrence Street and right again into Hovell Street before finishing at the post office gates.

Traditionally the march travels along Elgin Boulevard and then right into High Street, but both are closed.

The march will start at the traditional time of 10.45am before the service begins at the cenotaph at 11am.

Sub-branch secretary Jenny Bolt said a contingency plan had been in place since the Elgin Boulevard re-alignment and associated works in High Street began in mid-January.

“Everything is the same except for the march route,” she said.

The sub-branch has engaged local company Trafficking Road Services to handle traffic management on the day and applied for the necessary permits from council to temporarily close roads.

The $4.3 million Elgin Boulevard re-alignment began in mid-January, with High Street to be closed for three months.

But the wet weather is expected to push back the completion date until some time in May.

Last night a council spokeswoman said the rain had forced work on the re-alignment to stop for the past two days.

“How long it is stopped will depend on how long the rain continues. It will take a while for the road to dry out before work can start again,” she said.

The council last night closed High Street at the Safeway supermarket because of the heavy rain but it was due to reopen today before 6.30am.

Meanwhile, arrangements for the Albury Anzac Day march have also been finalised.

Both sides of Dean Street will be used again and all school groups will disperse into Townsend Street as will Scouts, Cubs, cadets and army personnel at the end of the parade.

All other marchers, horses and vehicles will turn into Elizabeth Street to finish.
