Albury has already had its highest April fall — 110.8 millimetres — topping the 101.2 millimetres that fell in 1998.
Drivers had to divert around Wodonga’s central business district overnight on Thursday after the rain forced the closure of the Elgin Boulevard–High Street intersection near the Safeway supermarket.
The intersection, site of major works to realign the roads, closed from at 7pm Thursday until 10.30am yesterday.
Wodonga Council community relations manager Sue Beattie said the heavy rain had created muddy conditions on a gravel section.
She said High Street businesses had shown great understanding when told of the closure.
And she said contractors and the council were confident the road would open within a month, barring extreme weather conditions.
The rain kept State Emergency Services volunteers busy with more than 50 calls for help in the North East on Thursday.
Duty officer John Newlands said the jobs had ranged from fallen trees to leaking roofs.
He said there were no significant concerns.
“It’s just a result of consistent rain but there was plenty of space in the river system after a dry patch before this so all the water has been able to go into there,” he said.
While there were fewer incidents north of the Border, volunteers were still kept busy.
Murray region deputy controller Craig McIntyre wanted to remind people how to prepare for the wet weather.
“If people trim vegetation and clean gutters it will stop drains blocking,” he said.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said the rain had cleared and dry conditions were expected for the next week.
