While Moira Council is set to meet with Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder about its preferred “green” route, the neighbouring Corowa Council has chosen the “grey” route parallel to the old road bridge as its preference.
Neither council appears ready to budge, so Mr Mulder may have the difficult task of acting as referee.
Among those attending the Corowa meeting there are differences of opinion on the route that should be taken.
Corowa Council’s position has been rejected by those Yarrawonga and Mulwala residents who have sided with Moira because they want to see traffic taken out of Yarrawonga’s main street.
Corowa mayor Fred Longmire says the council is correct to endorse the “grey route” and he is standing firm on what he has described as “mounting pressure” for the council to “roll over”.
There are also residents who backed the Corowa Council’s view.
Yesterday’s discussion sets the scene for an important meeting early next month when Mr Mulder sits down to discuss the bridge issue with Corowa’s neighbours at Moira.
