They are just some of the colourful cast of characters in Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s production of The Deep, adapted from Tim Winton’s children’s book of the same name.
It tells the story of a young girl named Alice who is on a beach holiday with her family but is too scared to venture too far into the gleaming blue water.
The play is told using a clever mix of full-body and hand puppets and a minimalist set, which all work together to push the boundaries of audiences’ imaginations.
“Children in particular respond really well to it,” Spare Parts associate director Michael Barlow said.
“Puppet theatre takes the audience to a place that’s more animated, that goes beyond natural representations ... and often children are at that level already.
“They just go with it so readily.”
After this morning’s show, Spare Parts will move to Sydney for the next leg of the national tour.
Today’s show starts at 10.30am and is ideal for children aged between four and 12.
