With a bumper crowd expected for the Easter Sunday Yarrawonga-Wangaratta match at Mulwala, the Pigeons will have fund-raising buckets at the gate for any football fans who want to make a donation.
Co-coach Chris Kennedy yesterday said it was a gesture that, hopefully, would reap some rewards.
“It’s probably a really good opportunity to create awareness of what’s happened to James,” Kennedy said.
“We’re expecting a big crowd and if everyone as they are coming through the gate is aware and consider donating, we think it’s a great opportunity to support him.”
Albury player James McQuillan remains in the spinal unit at the Austin Hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained in the round-one clash with Yarrawonga.
Kennedy said Yarrawonga was committed to doing what it could to support the young defender.
“The clubs that were involved in it, you do feel part of it, along with Echuca (James’ home club) and we want to make sure we’re involved,” he said.
Albury vice-president Paul Joss said the support for James was greatly appreciated.
“The family is overwhelmed by the amount of support across the region from the community, sporting clubs, players and friends,” Joss said.
“As fund-raising gains momentum for James, we hope to make further announcements in the coming weeks.”
The Ovens and Murray league has also extended an offer to all clubs who want to participate by ensuring fund-raising buckets are made available at their games.
