FOR some motorists a licence does not seem to be a prerequisite to driving on the Border’s streets.

A survey of Albury Local Court lists last week shows more than 30 disqualified and unlicensed driving cases, an average of more than seven matters per day.
It is apparent there is a group of drivers who do not take licensing requirements seriously and have little respect for fellow motorists.
That is underlined when you learn that one disqualified motorist told police he was driving because he wanted to buy a bottle of Coke and another had never had a licence, but still took to using his ignition key.
How to tackle such offenders is vexed.
Clearly not every disqualified driver can be sent to jail, but there still needs to be a stern message sent by courts.
Fines can certainly have a sting, though sadly in some cases it won’t be until the disqualified driver has a serious crash that the depth of their stupidity hits home.
One can only hope that such motorists rethink their behaviour before reaching that point, but based on the evidence in Albury court last week it seems unlikely.
Sadly, to borrow an old road safety slogan, there are still too many bloody idiots on the road.
