Nathan Schubert’s meetings with children living among rubble from Typhoon Hainan in Tacloban, Leyte, spurred him to act.
He and his mother, Pam Schubert, are now raising money to help provide them with food, medicine and shelter.
Mr Schubert went to the stricken area in February to help Wodonga firm Connelly Construction rebuild huts and will return there soon.
“They were just so thankful and so appreciative,” he said.
“You return with an appreciation for what you’ve got.”
He found the children still smiling despite disease and malnutrition.
After telling their plight to his mother, she decided to give half the funds from a month-long garage sale to them.
The other half is going to Sudanese orphans through US-based group Make Way Partners, with whom she has made four trips to South Sudan.
The sale at 155 Melbourne Road (near the Salvation Army store) continues for three weeks.
Mrs Schubert may be phoned on 0429 338 268.
