ALAN J. Lappin is quick to quote “97 per cent of climate scientists accept evidence supporting human-induced climate change” (The Border Mail, April 15).

This well-worn hacked quote is totally misleading, because the original paper written by John Cook stated “a 97.1 per cent scientific consensus that man had caused at least half (or most) the 0.7 degrees celsius global warming since 1950.” (Original standard definition).
Cook’s 97.1 per cent claim has been proved false by a peer- reviewed paper in the reputable journal Science and Education.
Titled Climate Consensus and “Misinformation” and written by Legates, it proves beyond doubt that major math errors have been circulated to mislead the public and shut down debate.
Only 41 of the 11,944 published climate papers Cook examined explicitly stated man caused most of the warming since 1950.
The true consensus among published scientific papers is now demonstrated to be not 97.1 per cent, as Cook had claimed, but only 0.3 per cent (source: wattsupwiththat.com).
Carbon dioxide may cause global warming but there is absolutely no consensus about the exact amount.
No doubt many scientists consider it possible, as I do, that human activity has caused some warming, but not most warming.
There have been no rises in the earth’s temperature for 17 years.
Over the same period the carbon dioxide levels have increased by more than 8 per cent.
When are the IPCC, NASA, CSIRO and the Greens going to call for an immediate switch to nuclear power to save our planet?
Until this happens all the catastrophic doomsday predictions have no credibility.
