The recent article on Mount Buffalo Chalet revealing the forthcoming auction of furniture is a omen of what is to come.
If the proposed demolition of the accommodation section of the building goes ahead, the minister’s comments about “bringing it back to life” will be complete rubbish.
When the state government says it wants to save the building, it actually means it just wants to save money — no more, no less.
Having worked there for a number of years, I’m very concerned about the loss of a unique accommodation facility in one of the most unique environments in the world — the Buffalo plateau.
No longer will future generations be able to experience a long lost “old world” environment among the huge boulders and snow gums, and we’ll all be the worse for it.
Any suggestions that the place couldn’t run at a profit are also rubbish — it did so in the early 1980s due to a clever advertising campaign with about 55 staff working there.
Is there any hope yet of reclaiming an experience that is hard to put a price on?
