The failure of the driver of the stolen white Mitsubishi Magna to stop at a random breath test site on Bridge Street sparked the chase at 11.30am.
Benalla’s Sgt Brad McMennemin said highway patrol had chased the vehicle at a dangerous 90 to 100km/h.
During the three-minute chase, a passenger had jumped out of the car in Neil Avenue.
“A member of the public could quite easily have been hurt by the erratic driving,” Sgt McMennemin said.
“At one stage in Benson Street, the driver lost control and hit a parked caravan.”
The driver then reversed into the police car before speeding off.
Police ended the chase to concentrate on finding the passenger who had left the car.
A South Australian man, 48, was then arrested on Rundle Street. He was later released.
Sgt McMennemin said police were still hunting the driver of the Magna, stolen from Greta Road, Wangaratta on Tuesday afternoon.
