Insp Anthony Moodie said the victim, 72, was asleep at home at about 2.30am when he awoke to find another man standing in his room, shining a torch on him.
There was a short wrestle between the two men before the victim was punched in the face.
Insp Moodie said the offender fled along Young Street and into Swift Street.
He is described as being of a solid, muscular build and about 182 centimetres. He was wearing dark pants, a dark green or blue jumper but his face was covered.
Insp Moodie said police were appealing for witnesses.
They believe motorists in the area of Young and Swift streets at about 2.30am might have seen the person they are seeking.
