1.22PM: A Wodonga restaurant has been gutted by fire overnight.
Police and CFA investigators have spent the morning examining the Dragon Court Chinese Restaurant in McHarg’s Lane, off High Street.
It is still unknown whether the blaze, which started in the kitchen area about 9.30pm, was deliberately lit or an accident, or how it was sparked.
Detective Acting Sgt Ian Deverell said the fire had severely damaged the kitchen and caused extensive smoke damage.
The restaurant will have to remain closed for some time while repairs are undertaken.
“Obviously the owners are upset about the whole incident,” Act Sgt Deverell said.
“His restaurant has been damaged and that is obviously going to affect his income.”
Act Sgt Deverell praised the efforts of the 20 firefighters from Wodonga and Wodonga West, whose quick work saved much of the building and adjoining premises.
He appealed for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the fire and seen something to come forward.
Any information to Wodonga detectives (02) 6049 2600.
