The city’s main street had been shut at the Elgin Boulevard intersection since January, but traffic returned at 6pm ahead of the Anzac Day long weekend.

A slight dip in High Street near the intersection has been created with the road level lowered to improve drainage in central Wodonga.

Mayor Rod Wangman said further works would occur along High Street in coming years to bring the remainder of the road down to the same level.

“We are thrilled that we have been able to open the road as we have hoped in April and know that the efforts to do this will be well appreciated by businesses,” he said.

“We would like to thank the community and traders for their patience and support and the contractors Excell Gray Bruni for their outstanding efforts.

“In the past week, kerb work, concrete parking bays and centre medians have been completed and the initial primer seal was laid this afternoon.

“As a result, the site fencing has been removed and some parking bays are available, with the rest to open on Monday.”

After the High Street re-opening, the focus will switch to the construction of Elgin Boulevard between Smythe Street and High Street.

It will take priority before contractors move to the other side of Elgin Boulevard in June.

Cr Wangman said motorists could still face some minor changes.

“There will be times in coming weeks that further interruptions to traffic will occur while traffic signals, street lights, further landscaping and the final asphalt sealing of the road take place,” he said.

“But we will keep these to a minimum as much as possible.

“We are thrilled that it is all coming together.”

The council will be installing four raised zebra crossings between the water tower and South Street next month.

They will provide pedestrian priority and are designed to slow traffic which is now under 40km/h restrictions.

The re-opening of High Street won’t change one-off plans for today’s Anzac Day march.

The parade will head down Havelock Street, onto Lawrence Street before turning into Hovell Street and finishing at Woodland Grove.
