While council staff have recommended undertaking one more report on options for the beleaguered boat, Cr Darren Cameron is drumming up support to dispose of it immediately.
A recent call for expressions on interest for new operators only drew two submissions — one was pulled at the 11th hour and the other was deemed non-compliant.
Off the river since Christmas 2006, the Cumberoona has cost ratepayers more than $2.5 million since the council bought and “saved” it in 1992 .
It never has and never will make a profit, Cr Cameron insists: “From day one this boat has been a disaster”.
He says the council would save $160,000 a year minimum if it cuts its losses and walks away now.
It was long hoped the Cumberoona would be a drawcard for Albury, and few would argue against the city investing in its tourism future.
With the odds stacked so high against the eye-catching icon, does the paddlesteamer have a place in that future?
Councillors need to make a decision on that once and for all — the ratepayers are waiting.
