Deputy Premier and Nationals leader Peter Ryan fired the first shot ahead of Tuesday’s Victorian budget with his visit to Benalla to join Bill Sykes in announcing the Benalla P-12 College would receive $5 million towards the development of its master plan and construction of stage one of a redevelopment project.
So often it’s the case that budget allocations are leaked well ahead and announcements carefully orchestrated to effectively remove all elements of surprise for the recipients.
This time that wasn’t the case in Benalla with P-12 College principal Barbara O’Brien saying there was no indication the school would be receiving the money.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that with a state election due before the end of the year, the Victorian government is going to make the most of its budget opportunities this week to ensure it secures electoral support.
That is in stark contrast to their federal counterparts, who have no electoral battle looming and are taking a tough line with their pre-budget rhetoric.
