But councillors last night rejected the recommendation, instead voting in favour of having another report compiled for them later this year.
They have requested that report include reference to the costs and capabilities of an internet-based, closed-circuit television system, arguing it may be a less expensive option for Dean Street.
Albury Council needs to carefully consider the cost of security cameras; those options detailed in the report to last night’s meeting ranged in cost from an initial outlay of between $257,000 to $852,000, with recurrent annual costs of between $103,000 and $610,000.
None of the costings included the amount of additional staff time needed to manage the system.
However, those councillors supporting the installation of CCTV are motivated by a rise in the number of violent incidents fuelled by alcohol during the first half of this year.
The council remains divided upon the installation of the cameras and it is a debate that looks set to continue for some time to come.
