Jindera-based John Murray said he hoped to improve participation and opportunities for his community from youth to elders.

“When we get together, it’s usually for funerals and sorry events,” he said.

“I’d like to see people get together through sport.”

Mr Murray has a background working with schools and indigenous families in the North East for the Victorian Government and Woomera Aboriginal Corporation.

But he wanted to come back and work for the community where he was born and grew up.

“The networks and relationships I have with the local community will provide better links with Albury Council,” he said.

Since taking on the role in February, Mr Murray has organised a visit from Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan, a touch football event and art projects.

He said his aims included educating the wider community on important Aboriginal issues, identifying service gaps and assisting in the reconciliation process.

The council’s Wagirra Trail project leader Cassandra Storm said they were excited to have Mr Murray on board.

Mr Murray has organised a movie night for National Reconciliation Week, which began on Tuesday.

Regent Cinemas is showing the film Lionel at 10.30am on Monday, about Lionel Rose, the first Aboriginal to win a world boxing title.
