The club wants $300,000 to transfer drainage from land it owns in Parkers Road onto the course to allow for the land’s redevelopment.
It is also seeking $300,000 over the next three years to pay for ongoing maintenance on the course.
SS&A Club chief operating officer Gerard Darmody says there is no guarantee the golf course can continue to operate without the council’s support.
He cited the example of the course’s 30-year-old irrigation system that would need replacement in the next two or three years.
While Cr Mark Byatt agreed the Wodonga golf course was an asset the city could not afford to lose, he has stopped short of agreeing the council should provide its support.
There is increasing demand upon the council to finance the development of sporting assets across the city.
The council’s decision to provide $300,000 to the new Murray United soccer club has been welcomed by many but drawn criticism from others who believe other clubs and grounds are just as worthy of the support.
