It is understood Dr Napthine returned to Melbourne last night to be with family after his mother, Theresa Napthine, died.
Dr Napthine said his mother was loved and adored by her ten children and many grandchildren, and has been a strong and positive guiding influence on all of their lives.
The Premier praised his mother for raising ten children and for being a very caring and loving mother and grandmother.
He expressed thanks to all members of the Victorian community who had sent their best wishes to his family at this time.
Dr Napthine had been expected to visit Wodonga Rendering this morning before speaking at a private Liberal Party function.
